Eliptical Machine Rating
How fast should my heart rate go when I exercise?
When I exercise on an eliptical or jogging on a treadmill the machine shows that my heart rate goes between 170 to 192. Isn't that really high? I usually don't even feel like I'm working out that hard when it's at that rate, but I get worried that my heart rate is too high. I'm only 30, normal weight, but don't exercise a lot. I look fit though, and have started lifting weights lately.
Firstly just because you are skinny or in the ideal weight range doesn't mean you are healthy. What you should firstly do is calculate your BODY MASS INDEX (BMI). Sounds complicated but it is'nt, it basically tells you if you're a healthy weight for your height.
BMI = weight (kg) / height (cm)
There are plenty of websites today which allow you to calculate your BMI, all you need to know is your height and weight.
one good one is

Next, your heart rate can sometimes go really high, especially during cardio exercises such as running etc since your muscles require a higher oxygen rich blood supply as they are working harder.
However, the number of beats per minute has an upper limit of 220 minus your age. To calculate the maximum number of beats your heart can take..
= 220 - your age
= 220 - 30
=190bpm
190 is the number of beats your heart should be able to take at max, since yours has been upto 192, only suggests that you are quiete unhelathy so your heart isnt able to pump as much bloody around the body per beat so it needs to beat faster and faster to meet the demand.
Do cardio exercises but dont exhasut your self too much. Do aound 30mins worth of cardio exercises everyday to get your self in a little bit of shape and your heart will get healther, and be able to pump more blood around the body per beat. as a result your heart rate during exercise and rest will drop.
